Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nespresso C190 Capsule Espresso Machine TitaniumCustomer Review: Make a perfect cup of espresso every time!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Espresso has always been important to me. I am French, and spent some time living in France. It is important to acknowledge that no matter where you go, your espresso is only going to be as good as the person making it. If the beans are not ground well, the coffee is not tamped properly, the water is not hot enough (or too hot,) you are going to end up with a nasty, bitter espresso.
This machine takes away EVERY SINGLE variable that might leave you with a crappy tasting coffee.
Turn the bugger on, it warms up in under a minute. Pop a capsule in, and pull the lever forward. This machine is manual, which I perceive as a good thing. I enjoy being able to control how much water comes out without having to program it. After your espresso cup is full, move the lever back to the middle position and there you have it! A perfect cup of espresso with more crema than your friend, the self-proclaimed espresso-making-expert could ever make.
The added convenience of not having to clean up espresso grinds is certainly a bonus. Make no mistake, this bad boy makes excellent coffee, even if you did have to clean up grounds it would still be a contender amongst the best espresso makers for that price.
The steam nozzle works well, but takes a little while to get used to. It is not full-size, and appears to have been made to work directly with a cappucino cup, as opposed to those large stainless pitchers. I dont think that the nozzle would be long enough to use a large stainless pitcher for foam. Nespresso sells one on their website that is designed size-wise to work perfectly. I prefer to just use a regular old coffe mug to steam the milk. It might seem akward for a moment, but if you have more than 5 brain-cells and can chew a pack of gum and walk at the same time, you will be whipping up some excellent cappucinos in no time.
Another slight criticism with the machine (and I am grasping for straws here) is that it seems a little plasticky. I dont know how to explain it, but when you make an espresso it seems to rattle a little bit more than other machines I have owned. I am probably making a mountain out of a mole-hile, but I would not consider this machine quiet.
Finally, we come to the price of capsules. This should probably be your determining factor in whether or not you should purchase this machine. The capsules cost $0.49 each. Yes, its more expensive than buying espresso beans and grinding them yourself, there is no question. But, depending on how much you pay for beans, the difference could be 20 cents or less. Oh, and dont forget that beans go stale pretty quickly.
Nespresso says that they dont want retailers carrying the capsules "in order to guarantee freshness." You cannot buy them in a store, you must order them directly from Nespresso.
It takes approx. 2-3 days to arrive. So, if you forget to re-order them when you run out, dont expect to run to the nearest Starbucks to buy some beans.
I dont mind paying $0.49 for a cup of excellent espresso. Cleaning really irritates me, and the convenience along with the excellence of the espresso has me sold on this machine!
